Robert, I'm not convinced but you may be right - I haven't followed Ali G with much attention. If you are right, then it makes his catch-phrase "Is it because I's black?" even more vapid. Either way, it doesn't seem to me to have much bearing on Amy Winehouse.

I think she was and is taken so seriously because people who listened to her could tell the difference between play and parody. Unlike Ali G (though there the mockery may be partly directed at white youth wanting to be black), her music plays around with but shows a genuine reverence for the traditions of black music.

When I first heard Amy Winehouse I wondered how anyone could take seriously such a blatant parody of The Soul Diva then when I discovered she was Jewish I began to smile (this is musical Ali Gee I thought) and when I discovered that the Hawley Arms was one of her favourite pubs I positively warmed to her (if it's still anything like I remember it from the 80s).
