Hi Obrey

I notice that BASA colleagues have given some references. You could also ask officials at the universities of Edinburgh and Glasgow, which trained black medical students in the 19th century.

You know that Mary Seacole and her mother were not university or hospital trained, and that like other black nurses at the time they used mainly African remedies. Likewise, black men provided such services to fellow soldiers, especially in the West India Regiments, in the 1790s and before.

The unavailability of records may hinder finding the first black nurse or medical servant. Mary Seacole and her mother were certainly not the first black nurses because there are records to show that others, like Cuba Cornwallis before them, provided outstanding service to British soldiers.

Hi Arthur,

I hope all is well. My name is Obrey Alexis and I am a Senior Lecturer at Oxford Brookes University. I am currently exploring a piece of historical research looking at the first black/minority ethnic male nurse in the UK. I wondered if you would be able to assist me in finding out this information. Do you know of anyone who would lead me to this sort of information? I would very much welcome your support in this matter. This black/minority ethnic male nurse could have been someone who was a nurse that helped during the Crimean war or world war 1 or 2 or as far back as your source would take you.

In the UK we are aware of Florence Nightingale a white middle class nurse, Mary Seacole - a black nurse, Mr George Dunn - a white male nurse but we have no record of a black/minority male nurse who has contributed to nursing. By acquiring such information it would add to the body of knowledge in nursing. If this is something you feel you can assist me with then I would value your contribution.

Best wishes and thanks in advance for your support.

Obrey
