The National Archives and the University of York are supporting a collaborative Engineering Doctorate (EngD) on the development of interactive systems for integrating and interpreting records containing geo-spatial data.

Applications are invited for this post, which will work on a research project on interfaces for semantic data, likely commencing in autumn 2011. The research project is fully funded, with a tax-free stipend from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Council (EPSRC) of £16,666 p.a., and will be carried out in conjunction with studying for an Engineering Doctorate (EngD) in Large Scale Complex IT Systems (LSCITS). The programme is a full time, four-year doctoral level research degree involving a taught component, similar in scope to an MSc, and a research component requiring the Research Engineer to work closely with a sponsoring organisation, The National Archives.

The key objective of this project is to enhance the experience of potential users, both novice and experienced, of The National Archives' collections. This will be done through the design and prototyping of interfaces for interacting with data relating to the history of specific time periods, places or subjects.

This proposal is consistent with ongoing investment by The National Archives in digitisation and information retrieval, and complements it by adding dynamic ways of interacting with the content of those digitised records, specifically for retrieval and organisation of data by individual users. The aim is to help users make sense of the data presented and aid in the interpretation and understanding of what is contained within the archive collections.

The project will start with in-depth scenario-based design, exploring the user requirements of different potential users of the archives. This phase of the project will build on logs of data use already in existence for The National Archives and extend this by researching the methods used among focus groups of amateur and professional users researching specific sites. This design process will be used to design appropriate software solutions and also to select key record series which best support the initial development of a system within The National Archives.

The project will be supervised by Emma Allen, Head of Web Team at The National Archives, and Professor Helen Petrie and Dr Christopher Power, University of York.

The closing date for applications is Friday 15 July 2011.
