The Causes and Patterns of Disease (CaPOD) research theme seeks to appoint a high calibre graduate to undertake a 3 year studentship in one of the following areas: 

1. Unravelling links between transport to work choices and health. This project will use a multidisciplinary, mixed methods approach combining transport/air quality modelling with in depth field work and a population survey to understand links between transport and health. 

2. Nutrition during pregnancy and birth outcomes in twin pregnancies. This project will investigate the effect of nutrition (involving detailed dietary assessment) on the intrauterine growth and birth outcomes in twin pregnancies. 

3. Estimated organ radiation doses and cancer risks in relation to interventional and diagnostic fluoroscopic procedures in young people. This project will combine dosimetric and epidemiological methods to assess subsequent cancer risk in young cardiology patients exposed to radiation. 

4. Peri-conception exposure to potentially teratogenic medications. This project will investigate peri-conception exposure to prescribed medications and effect on pregnancy outcome in women with diabetes, using register data, case note review and data linkage. 

CaPOD is a multidisciplinary research theme which aims to contribute to the understanding, prevention and treatment of chronic disease across the life course. Our research falls into four research strands: chronic disease; environment and health; maternal and perinatal health; and paediatric research. Our work spans a diverse range of clinical specialities and utilises a range of research methods and methodologies. Funding Notes:

This is a 3-year full time studentship. A full award covers tuition fees at UK/EU rate and an annual stipend of approximately £13,590. 

You should have a first-class or upper-second-class honours degree in a relevant subject. A Masters level qualification in a relevant discipline is essential and related research experience is desirable.
