The University of Oxford proposes to appoint two full-time Postdoctoral
Research Assistants from 1 October 2011 or as soon as possible thereafter
for a period of four years.
 
These are temporary appointments to work on a major research project funded
by the European Research Council entitled ³From Late Medieval to Early
Modern: 13th to 16th Century Islamic Philosophy and Theology² (IMPAcT) under
the direction of the Principal Investigator, Dr Judith Pfeiffer. The
principal duties of the posts are to contribute to the project and conduct
independent research, the details of which can be found in the further
particulars (see below).
 
Applicants should, by the time of appointment, hold or expect to hold a
doctorate or equivalent qualifications in Islamic Studies, Middle or Near
Eastern Studies or another relevant field of study; have a primary expertise
in Islamic philosophy and/or theology or other relevant areas of Islamicate
intellectual history, preferably with a focus on the later middle/early
modern periods of Islam; have a high command of at least two Islamicate
languages from among Arabic, Persian, or Ottoman Turkish, and of two
European working languages in addition to English; have experience in or be
willing to attend requisite IT training courses; have sufficient
palaeographical skills to work with Islamic manuscripts; be able to
demonstrate that their research output will be of the highest order; be
willing to travel to, and live and carry out research for extended periods
in, the Middle East, Europe, and/or North America; and be able to work
effectively both independently and as part of a small team.
