Subject: CHIMES AT MIDNIGHT (FALSTAFF) on DVD

Just a quick note to alert you to the new Italian DVD release of Orson
Welles' CHIMES AT MIDNIGHT which is far and away the best video
presentation I have ever seen for the film. The DVD, under its FALSTAFF
title, has been released under the 'Sinister Films' label run by Luigi
Cozzi and distributed through the reputable Cecchi Gori group.

It is offered in anamorphic widescreen and as such has much better
resolution that the previous version made available in Spain and the UK.

The black and white images are sharp and clear and exhibit considerable
depth and the there are virtually no technical infelicities or scratches
to speak of in terms of print damage (the issues with the audio are the
one that have always been present).

It is PAL (so non Europeans will need a multi-region player) and comes
with either English or Italian language options with no forced
subtitles. By way of an extra it offers the music score by Lavagnino,
not as an isolated track during the film but as a separate feature with
its own menu and and track titles and, from the clips I have sampled, is
surprisingly robust and clear. Apart from a few still the other extras
is a small fold-out poster reproduction of the version attached to this
message (if it gets clipped, you can view it online here:
http://tinyurl.com/5uh63yg)

It can be ordered through Amazon UK (http://tinyurl.com/3rhqh3h) or
various retailers in Italy including of course the local Amazon branch (
http://tinyurl.com/3tjpjfw) which is really cheap - at under 10 euros
(plus postage) is an absolute steal.
