No, we don’t have 24hr medical
cover...the ‘medics’ we have are qualified Doctors and range in specialities we
have cardiac, respiratory and cancer Specialists amongst some regular G.P.’s-
most keep their hand in. The 1 incidence was a nut allergy.....ate
something she thought was ok but wasn’t.....this is a proposal to have one on
site.....we do have several employees that are sensitised to products and
continue to work here in different roles but still within the manufacturing
area....as yet not one (touch wood) has reacted so badly they need any medical
intervention.

I am
intrigued.....
From
a clinical perspective would be interested what these "anaphylactic" employees
are actually reacting to? If this reaction is so severe to warrant an
anaphylactic kit should more thought be given to reducing exposure? The initial
post said "the medics" would respond - are we to assume that you have 24 hr
medical cover ?

Terri,
From a health and safety
perspective, you need to be able to respond to emergencies that are caused by
your operations. The Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations require
equipment, facilities and personnel to be ‘adequate’.
Its back to the old nugget of do
a risk assessment. From your post, if the box is not OTT in price, you could say
that the control measure is reasonable, it would just need a system of check to
ensure that it was available and in date.
It is not uncommon for those
working with bees (In my experience) to provide this type of response. Sounds
like it would be appropriate for you.
Others may wish to
disagree…
Regards,
Richard

Hi List,
Any help on this matter would be much
appreciated.....
I work for a pharmaceutical manufacturer, we use in the
manufacture of those products , materials which are known skin and respiratory
sensitizers. Following are most recent AED update it has been discussed
within the circle of medics which are employed here that we should have an
anaphylactic kit. We do have 4 individuals on site that are classed as
‘anaphylactic’ and carry epi-pens, 1 has reacted at work and needed to be
shipped off to hospital.
I would not be expected to administer or use said kit as the
medics would respond but I am wondering whether this is OTT and is needed.
They are looking at a sealed box provided by a local pharmacy so there would be
no checking daily of said box as the pharmacy would know when it is due to
expire etc.
What do you think?
Thanks
Terri
