Back in the mid 1990’s When the course I lead was delivered at the RCN I was told exactly the same as Jane. I was horrified, particularly in view of the number of OHNs who practice as free lance consultants. Working at the RCN I was able to hot foot it to Chris Cox and highlight the problem. Chris highlighted that the RCN were worried should some free lance nurses practice outside their sphere of competency, from memory I think he referred to those nurses who work in potentially very lucrative roles as Expert Witnesses. We had a lengthy discussion regarding how OHNs practice, that clinically compared to nurses working in ITU we are low risk. They get cover why not OHNs. The long shot was that the rules were reviewed so that OHN consultants can get cover but that does not extend to anyone they employ just as Pippa writes below.
So in short, you are covered if you work within your competency. If RCN members want further clarification I would suggest that you write to Chris Cox, Director of Legal Services at the RCN, 20 Cavendish Square, London W1.

Hi All
I had a shock on Monday when I was told that the RCN insurance I pay monthly does not actually indemnify me if I was to work as a self employed OHA. I thought it was..... Also that sole practitioners require public liability insurance (which I do understand)
Any thoughts on this?
