Hi Tim I came across these in my last place of work, I had an employee who had been advised to stop smoking for health grounds. Like you I spoke with a local smoking cessation group and was told these devices are not made to help people stop smoking or reduce the effects of smoking. They are purely a device which allows people to keep their nicotine levels topped up when they are in an area that smoking is prohibited. The employee I was dealing with had been referred to me because they were stating that they were trying to stop smoking so didn't want to spend time stood with other smokers in the designated shelter and wanted to use the device in the canteen. This was a management decision and I just fed back the facts as above. It was decided by management, because this was not stopping smoking aid and that in appearance she was smoking that she wasn't allowed to use it in any area other than smoking shelter. For those that don't know, they look like ordinary cigarettes but are (usually) plastic, contain nicotine and emit a "vapour" which is reportedly harmless (by manufacturers) but it appears this is currently unproven. I must admit it had me stumped for a minute, I have approached my local NHS smoking cessation team for a view but was wondering if anyone on the list had a view or experiences about these things in their workplace, in particular in relation to smoking policy?
