Accreditation support in preparation for launch of revised standard
The MLA has agreed transitional arrangements that will be put in place in preparation for the launch of the refreshed Accreditation Scheme and its transfer to Arts Council England. MLA has revamped the 22-year-old Accreditation Scheme, in partnership with the sector UK-wide, to ensure its continued relevance in supporting museums to develop. The Arts Council and MLA are confident the refreshed Accreditation Scheme will be a major factor in the future success of museums across the UK. The new phase of Accreditation will be launched in the autumn of 2011 including an event at the Museums Association Conference in Brighton in October. Management of Accreditation is being transferred along with other MLA functions to Arts Council England and the launch of the refreshed Accreditation scheme by the Arts Council will be an important symbolic marker in the transfer process.

Sector urged to respond to legacy consultation
The Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) is urging representatives from the cultural and heritage sectors to respond to a HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) consultation into changes designed to encourage charitable legacies. As part of a general drive to boost philanthropic giving, the government announced plans in the last budget to introduce a lower rate of inheritance tax in cases where people leave a charitable legacy of 10% or more of their estate when they die.

40% of local authority museums cut staff
Early findings of MA cuts survey show huge loss of expertise across sector over the past year. Of some 63 responses so far to our cuts survey of local authority museums, 40% reported that they had cut paid staff by 10% or more in the last year, with half of them cutting over 25% of their workforce.

MA asks members to lobby MPs over copyright changes
The Museums Association is urging members to send a template letter to their local MP lobbying for the implementation of policies outlined in the Hargreaves Review of Intellectual Property. The Hargreaves Review was carried out in May to assess how far the UK’s intellectual property framework supports innovation, and to recommend changes that would better support creativity and economic growth. Proposals include creating an exception for museums copying works in their collections without clear rights for the sake of preservation; an exception for reproducing artistic works in material associated with their sale or exhibition without clear rights, and an exception for copying for parody.

Donation:  a donor has offered Pontypool Museum a 1950/60s Olympia typewriter but we are unable to accept it. It is in excellent condition, in a carry case and works perfectly - even still having the riband intact. The donor is happy for it to go to any museum and would particularly approve of it being in a handling collection where it would be used with schoolchildren. Sale of Collections
The MA leads sector thinking on sale of collections. In 2007 we amended our Code of Ethics to accept financially motivated disposal in exceptional circumstances, when it can be demonstrated that:

- it will significantly improve the long-term public benefit derived from the remaining collection
- it is not to generate short-term revenue (for example to meet a budget deficit)
- it is as a last resort after other sources of funding have been thoroughly explored
- extensive prior consultation with sector bodies has been undertaken
- the item under consideration lies outside the museum’s established core collection as defined in the collections policy.

In addition, the Code requires museums to ringfence any money raised as a result of disposal through sale solely and directly for the benefit of the museum’s collection. Money raised must be restricted to the long-term sustainability, use and development of the collection.

Pirate Exhibition at Abergavenny Museum
You might be surprised to hear that quite a lot of the most famous pirates were Welsh. Although a very small country with a small population, Welsh ports provided crews for ships that travelled all over the world. Some of the sailors, either by inclination, bad luck or force, ended up on pirate ships.

The latest exhibition at Abergavenny Museum, “Behold the Crew of Cymry - A History of Welsh Pirates”, features objects relating to pirates and seafaring, including ships models, navigational equipment and Nelson's musket.  Find out about the role of Wales and the part played by Welsh men, such as the famous pirate, Sir Henry Morgan. The display also includes fun for all the family. Behold the Crew of Cymry - A History of Welsh Pirates is at Abergavenny Museum until Sunday 11th September 2011.

Following the DP workshop at the conference, in which Judy Niner reported on new research on the psychology of using the fund-raising method, she plans to report back at next year’s AIM Conference with the results. The essential guide to the public sector equality duty: An overview for listed public authorities in Wales
By 2 April 2012 Listed bodies in Wales must have engaged with interested people as part of gathering relevant information to assess its activities against the general duty. Relevant information must be published as appropriate. The Equality Act 2010 (the Act) brings together and replaces the previous anti-discrimination laws with a single Act. It simplifies and strengthens the law, removes inconsistencies and makes it easier for people to understand and comply with it. The majority of the Act came into force on 1 October 2010.

The Act includes a new public sector equality duty (the ‘general duty’), replacing the separate duties on race, disability and gender equality. This came into force on 5 April 2011.

The new general duty covers the following protected characteristics:
- Age
- Gender reassignment
- Sex
- Race - including ethnic or national origin, colour or nationality
 -Disability
- Pregnancy and maternity
- Sexual orientation

Museums for the Future - A Development Toolkit
Renaissance South East has produced a new toolkit to help museums become the centre of a sustainable community. The toolkit provides a framework and materials for museums to become agents in forging a more environmentally sustainable future. The toolkit is offered free to museum staff and supporters and to anyone involved in museum training and development. Many of the examples refer to the South East of England but its approach is relevant to any museum in the UK or elsewhere. It will also be of interest to heritage sites, arts organisations, archives, libraries, botanic gardens and wildlife centres.

'A Tonic for the Nation' -The National Archives Festival of Britain collection
In 1947, after nearly a decade of war time austerity, rationing, and making-do, the government devised 'a tonic for the nation'. A national display illustrating the British contribution to civilisation, past, present and future was prescribed to mark the centenary of the Great Exhibition in 1851. This included contributions to the arts, science and technology, and industrial design. Though London’s South Bank was a focal point for much of the Festival, over 2,000 separate regional events were also held, as the Festival caught the national imagination. Memories are being reignited with the 60th anniversary in May 2011, when there will be events to mark the anniversary across Britain.

Decision due on Segontium Museum's future, Caernarfon
Talks are due to be held to decide the future of a museum and Roman fort which has closed amid financial problems. Segontium Museum in Caernarfon, Gwynedd, is shut until further notice and its board says it has suffered since many museum fees were dropped. It relies on admission fees and grants from the town council. Last month, it was claimed tourists could also be put off by litter allegedly caused by drunken youths gathering at the fort. The fort is believed to have been occupied from 78 AD and was the Roman HQ for north west Wales.

Teignmouth museum reopens as heritage centre
A museum in south Devon has reopened and been renamed after a restoration project by volunteers that has taken nearly 10 years to complete.
