Ralph,

This sounds like the kind of enthusiastic yet frustrated comment that surrounded the #cilip2 debates on Twitter, and led to the election of Phil B as an engaged "outsider" to the CILIP bubble.

Why don't you address CILIP directly and maybe even offer to do something about this yourself? Maybe you are the only one who sees a solution; maybe you have a responsibility to take the reins and steer us in the right direction... before it's too late?

Cheers,

M

Subject: CILIP suspends training programme

Apart from the message it sends to members and might-be members, to the unitiated this seems a rather strange decision.

Information skills are among the most transferable of all skills and being able to find and organise information puts people way ahead in the job market. Whichever job you're in, these skills are crucial.

I've long been surprised that Cilip hasn't promoted its courses more strongly to a wider audience: they've got captive expert teachers, a marketing team, yet seem to have restricted themselves to a very narrow, declining professional area (and one that's rarely been wealthy!).

There are several companies running courses in this area, charging four-figure fees, and turning people away.

I've tried a few of these courses. The content is much like you'd get in the first week at library school: taught, in general, by non-information professionals, yet attracting people from all over the world - sometimes, even as a condition of employment. It has always surprised me that Cilip leaves this to others to make money from.

Just as an example of people's enthusiasm: in a recent Update column, Phil B. recommended a new book entitled Beyond Google. I sent the jacket image to a number of non-professionals. Each responded: Wow - this is something new: I must buy the book. What's the invisible web? And how do I find a definition?

Next, they'll need training!

Ralph

This is the message on the website (see below). I am not sure that this is the right message to give to members / prospective members, actually, in terms of the benefit or otherwise of membership. If this was for a limited period of time 'cos of the financial situation OK, but this message does not suggest that. Also, what will happen to the training rooms that are now not being used?

Important Message to our Customers

From 1 July 2011 CILIP's Training & Development course programme is being suspended until further notice. CILIP's onsite training courses will still be delivered, as will specialist courses and networking events organised by CILIP's Special Interest Groups and regional Branches. CILIP's autumn programme of conferences, Executive Briefings and Suppliers Showcases will remain unaffected.

CILIP's CEO Annie Mauger says: "We have been undertaking an ongoing financial review of all CILIP's activities and have had to take some difficult decisions about the immediate future of our commercial training provision".

"The decision to suspend Training & Development courses presented at CILIP's London offices is part of a series of major changes that the Institute is making to its focus of operations as part of a major restructure programme. It is seeking to align them with the outcomes of Defining our Professional Future, a major consultation exercise during which more than 3,500 members and non-members were asked about CILIP's future and what they want from the Institute".

Onsite training opportunities

CILIP will continue its successful onsite courses, and full details are available here.

Other CILIP events in 2011

CILIP will present two major conferences and five Executive Briefings in the second half of 2011. Full details are available here.

CILIP Special Interest Group training courses

A number of CILIP's Special Interest Groups present training courses. Details are available on CILIP's online Calendar.
