JUNE courses:
Introduction to DNS
June 29th 2011
The Moller Centre, Cambridge
Every time someone uses JANET or the commercial Internet they make use of
DNS. DNS handles the mapping between the users requests and internet
addresses. The main objective of this course is to provide a basic
understanding of DNS principles and theory. Some of the key technical
implementations will be reviewed in the context of a Windows 2003 DNS
interface but the priority of the course is to provide delegates with a
sound background in DNS principles.

Virtualisation Fundamentals
June 30th 2011
The Moller Centre, Cambridge
This course introduces the topic of virtualisation, focusing on the
successful implementation of the technology on campus networks with its
impact on infrastructure and security. Virtualisation technology has its
roots in the mainframe technology of the mid 1960s but recently has seen
resurgence. Allowing multiple instances of an Operating System to share
the same hardware with more granular control of machine configuration and
networking has huge benefits.
The ability to run multiple Operating Systems on the same hardware has
cost benefits, addresses the problem of underutilised server hardware, can
assist with business continuity as well as supporting the increasing green
agenda.
