italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies Dear Dr. Brook,

This is excellent news indeed. Could you please inform the list regarding general eligibility? My main question is whether these post-docs are available for non-EU applicants. This is often the question, from our side of the pond, so I invite all announcers of such good tidings to include that simple information, which is often lying deep in the supporting pages of the relevant links.

Sincerely,

Deanna Shemek

Dear all,

We have some very good news for post-docs:

‘50 new five-year Birmingham Fellowships are now available for  outstanding post-doctoral researchers who are on a trajectory to become the next generation of research and academic leaders.  The Birmingham Fellowships have been designed to support the Fellows as they establish themselves as rounded and mature academics at the University of Birmingham. The Fellowships will be five-year appointments, giving the Fellows the time they need to engage in serious research and to establish themselves within the academic community at Birmingham, nationally and internationally and the best candidates may be offered permanent lectureships at the end of the period.’

The two themes, of the twenty available, that are most likely to be of interest to Italianists, are ‘Europe’ and ‘Memory and Exile’.

Duration of post – The Fellowship will be for five years, at the end of which Fellows who have excelled may be offered permanent academic posts, normally at Senior Lecturer or Reader level
The post is open to internal and external candidates. We intend to keep the call for Birmingham Fellowship applications open until all the posts are filled, but for those candidates without external funding, the first deadline for consideration will be 17.00 on Thursday, 1 September 2011.
Salary – Normally £36,862 to £49,539 (Grade 8), although in exceptional cases appointments may be made
at a higher grade.
Informal enquiries – Detailed information is available at www.birmingham.ac.uk/birminghamfellows. General questions about the scheme, process and procedures can be directed to [log in to unmask].
Academic questions should be addressed to the named contact in the relevant area as identified on the
website or to [log in to unmask] to be redirected to the appropriate academic contact.

I will be happy to answer questions from those in the field of Italian Studies, as we are keen to support excellent  Italianists for these Fellowships. Please spread the word to anyone you think might be the right candidate for these.

Dr Clodagh Brook
