Open PhD Position:

Quantifying Deformation and Erosion in the Pamir Mountains, Central Asia

The Earth System Dynamics research group at the University of Tübingen, Germany, announces (subject to final grant approval) an open PhD position in quantifying regional erosion rates and climate-tectonic processes in the Tien Shan-Pamir Mountains. The PhD student will be expected to perform an integration of bedrock and catchment-wide measurements of cosmogenic radionuclides, low-temperature thermochronology, optically stimulated luminescence, and remote-sensing data.
The candidate will conduct fieldwork and laboratory analysis of samples. Candidates are expected to be active participants in an international and interdisciplinary work group environment, and to participate in the broader scope and goals of the TIPTIMON project. TIPTIMON is a joint research program to be funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education (BMBF). The project will quantify the Late Cenozoic geodynamics, climate, and resulting hazards in Central Asia. The program involves partners from the Helmholtz Centre Potsdam, GFZ, the Technical University Bergakademie Freiberg, the University of Potsdam, the University of Tübingen and the Senckenberg Natural History Collections Dresden. A total of 11 PhD positions are funded through these various institutions. Applicants are expected to have an MSc, or a German "Diplom", in an Earth science field (e.g. geophysics, geochemistry, geomorphology) or other natural sciences, mathematics, or engineering disciplines with a geoscience background.
The position is available in 2011 and candidates should start as soon as possible. Application materials are due as soon as possible; and will not be accepted after Sept. 1, 2011. The position is available for ~3 years (salary according to TV-L E13, 50%, pending final approval). Interested persons should send a Resume/CV with a list of courses taken, a 1-page statement of research interests, copies of credentials/degrees and certificates, and contact information for three referees familiar with the candidate’s work. If the applicant’s native language is neither English nor German, they should submit proof of English language proficiency. Application materials should be in English and emailed (in PDF format) directly to Prof. Todd Ehlers, [log in to unmask] Additional information about the Earth System Dynamics research group is available at: http://www.geo.uni-tuebingen.de/esdynamics.
The University of Tübingen is committed to increasing the proportion of women in research and teaching positions and therefore encourages qualified candidates to apply. Disabled persons will be given preference if equally qualified. Employment takes place via the Central Administration of the University.
