Secondary spend from school visits to museums/heritage sites Thanks to those who responded to my request for data on spend by pupils visiting museums and historic sites.  There does not appear to be much detailed research on this, but thanks to Ceri Black and Trudie Cole for pointing me towards QA Research’s national report on out of school trips http://www.qaresearch.co.uk/index.php?/component/option,com_rokdownloads/Itemid,49/id,7/view,file/

For those who are interested, the average amount of spending money the teachers surveyed recommend their students take to museums and galleries is £5.93 giving an average secondary spend per trip of £251.19 based on the mean group size of 42. The actual amounts vary considerably but almost half of schools recommend students take between £4 and £5 each on a trip to a museum or gallery.  This is higher than I was expecting – perhaps, in the current climate, we need to consider secondary spend in more detail when advocating the importance of formal learning audiences.

Hope you are all enjoying the sunshine, even if it’s only through the office window!
