Marie Don't forget the very important Access Technology Loan Scheme with the OU in 1998 which assessed HE students for assistive technology studying at the OU. The work designed and conducted by NFAC members (the pre NNAC body) set the scene for the soon to follow DSA. I was sure there were just 2 DSA allowances in the first instance; equipment and travel. NMHs and consumables (general) followed about 2 years later. Students were not ony means tested at first but also had to be under 25 and have a physical or sensory impairment. If memory serves me right it was 1994 or 96 that saw the inclusion of NMHs when students with dyslexia were allowed to apply for DSA. I think it was 2001 when students over the age of 55 were also allowed to apply for DSA; as the government dropped the policy of having to be able to work for two years after the completion of a degree which was aided by the DSA. Not sure of I have this right but was this the same year that saw the first publication of Bridging the Gap? In 2005 the rules for eligibility was set at the current standards.
