Dear Allstat,

Applications are invited for a PhD position in the area of spatial statistics and cancer epidemiology in Switzerland.  The position is available immediately however a later starting date is possible by negotiation.

Appropriate qualifications are either a diploma in Mathematics with a substantial statistical component or in biomedical related field followed by postgraduate qualification in Statistics. Applicants should also have sound computing skills. The successful applicant will register for a PhD degree at the University of Basel.

The main objectives of the research project are (i) to assess spatio-temporal patterns of gender-related cancer mortality and morbidity in Switzerland (ii) to identify regional differences and trends in cancer management and (iii) to develop models for predictions of gender-related cancer for the next ten years.

The project is funded by Swiss National Foundation and provides support for 3 years. It is a collaborative research between the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute, the Cancer registry of St Gallen-Appenzell, the Cantonal hospital of St Gallen, the Institute of Social and Preventive Medicine of the University of Bern and the National Institute for Cancer Epidemiology and Registration (NICER).
