Thank you for the replies guys. I have a
much better idea of the ways in which we can start doing this now.
Thanks again

Subject: Re: [SHCG-LIST] Insurance
Hello all,
We are required
to put an insurance value against every item when we accession it, which I
suspect may be due to the fact that the service has significant fine and
decorative art collections but the rule is applied without exception.
This insurance value is supposed to include the cost of staff time to locate a
replacement.
I found this
especially challenging when I started, never having had to do this
before. On the whole, if it is a common item without a particular
provenance I give it a nominal value but for items which are collectible
or are made of metal (scrap values are high for certain metals!) I would
do a little more desk based research - eBay is actually very useful, in
addition to the usual Miller's guides.
To give an
example, I had a recent enquiry from
In the course of
our exchange he sent me a link to an eBay auction, where a very similar set had
sold for $349 earlier this year, so I increased our valuation from £15 to £300
(!). It is difficult to judge, and it might be that we would not replace
it if it was lost because we have it because of it was from a local resident,
but it is American made and doesn't meet our collecting policy without this
provenance.
This is a really
interesting discussion - insurance values tend to muddy the water between historical
and financial value, the tendency to insure at higher values for the
irreplaceable local items but the fear that local authorities under pressure
get pound signs when something is insured for thousands of pounds.

Here at the
Warwickshire Museum Service we have never insured entire collections, in any
discipline.
We have
identified a limited number of objects and specimens that are important (not
just in financial terms, but because they have significance for the story of
Warwickshire) and these are the items that go on our insurance schedule.
For some of
these we have had independent valuations from reputable outside specialists,
although there's a cost to doing this - for example, several textile items have
been valued by Bonhams because we just don't know the appropriate value
ourselves .
With most of the
items on our insurance schedule, the insurance would pay for repair and
conservation in the event of damage - not the replacement of the object itself.
Interested to
hear what other people do!
Kind regards,
Maggie Wood

Hello all.
Big question.
We are trying to sort out insurance on our collection as a whole and
need to put a value on all of our social history objects. This is quite
difficult as we see the value in terms of its significance to people and
history, but we need to look at it in terms of money.
Have any of you recently had to deal with this and if so, would you mind
sharing some ways in which you went about valuing your collections?
I’d really appreciate any input.
Many Thanks
