The Netherlands give LHV´s a more permanent status After ten years of trials the Netherlands will give LHV’s (25.25m/60T) a more permanent legal status. This has been announced yesterday by the Dutch Minister of Transport & Environment, Schultz van Haegen. By doing so she gives a clear signal to the Dutch transport companies and Europe that The Netherlands have confidence in the efficiency and safety of EMS-combinations. Extensive monitoring and research indicates that there have been no significant problems with LHV’s taking part in daily traffic. All LHV combinations in the Netherlands replace regular smaller combinations, giving an average CO2 reduction of 27%. The largest group of users by far are retail companies, like supermarkets and large chain stores. At the moment over 500 LHV’s are in operation and the number is expected to grow rapidly. . The very positive results over the long trial period and the growing number of LHV’s operating daily in the Netherlands, justifies giving the transport companies more certainty about the future operations of LHV’s. The LHV operations will remain exemption based, but without the “trial status”. Also the special conditions, like an extra examination of drivers and restricted routes (main truck routes) remain in place. Both the authorities and the transport organisations are convinced that this secures safe and responsible operations in the future. The translation in English of the two most recent studies on LHV’s in practice and on traffic safety are expected to be published by the end of June Loes Aarts, (DVS) [log in to unmask] http://english.verkeerenwaterstaat.nl/english/ *********************************************************** The ROAD-TRANSPORT-TECHNOLOGY mailing list is published by International Forum for Road Transport Technology www.road-transport-technology.org ***********************************************************
