I have dealt with a similar situation very recently. A staff member working in the Painting/Decorating workshop was suffering migraines which resulted in regular episodes of short term sickness absence. He also coincidentally suffers SAD. I advised changing the lighting to natural daylight bulbs and since this was done he has had no sickness absence due to migraines. On a personal note I have to say that when I initially visited his work area I left with a headache (not something I often get unless bought and paid for!!!) and when I revisited a few days ago the difference was quite amazing! I would recommend these bulbs as it felt as though the workshop was flooded with daylight…..there are no windows in there!

Kind regards,

Rita

Subject: Natural daylight bulbs versus fluoro bulbs
Sensitivity: Confidential

Hi All,

In the past I have come across situations where fluorescent bulbs (in open plan offices etc) have been replaced with natural daylight bulbs and this has produced a more positive response among staff, but I was wondering if any of you have had more detailed experience/ evidence of these bulbs reducing reported health problems e.g: migraines etc (I’m not specifically referring to SAD on this occasion). I do also clearly acknowledge that this is not a “one size fits all” approach!

I am going through the HSE and CIBSE lighting guidance at present but would be keen to hear of real experiences!

Kind Regards,
