BBC Hands on History

Domesday Reloaded (website to launch 12 May 2011)
Launched in 1986 to celebrate the 900th anniversary of the original
Domesday Book, the first BBC Domesday project was one of the most
pioneering interactive campaigns of its time. The BBC asked the public
to submit details about their local area to help compile a digital
snapshot of the country. All the data - pictures, maps, video, surveys,
statistics, essays and personal testimonies - were digitally etched into
the two laser discs. However the system rapidly fell into obsolescence
and very few people ever got to see the finished results.

Now, 25 years on, the archive will be republished online giving people
of all ages an opportunity to explore the images and articles from the
past. Visitors will also be able to help bring the project into the
present day by sending in their current stories, comments and
photographs, via the website, blogs and Twitter. The project will be
supported by programmes on Radio 4 and local radio and TV. Go to
www.bbc.co.uk/domesday <http://www.bbc.co.uk/domesday> to start
browsing from 12 May 2011.

The BBC will be distributing promotional packs in June, giving more
information on the project and ideas on different ways to get involved.

Dig! (tbc September 2011)
BBC Two's Digging for Britain is returning for a second series,
currently planned for broadcast this September. In the run up to
broadcast, Hands on History will be inspiring families to get hands on
with archaeology all across the summer with a new phase - Dig! The
campaign is looking to work with, and link up, Archaeological societies,
museums and libraries to showcase local finds and run hands-on
activities with the public to help them learn practical historical and
archaeological skills. On offer are workshop resource packs available to
order through your regional Learning Project Manager. These include four
workshop plans, ranging in scale and difficulty, plus stickers and
posters to market your activity. The project launches mid July and
activities can run throughout the summer and into early Autumn.

Reel History of Britain (Autumn 2011)
In this programme Melvyn Bragg meets people as they recount fascinating
and surprising stories about how life in Britain used to be, as told
through the moving reels of the British Film Institute's and regional
archive collections. The programme will use archive and real stories to
highlight the hardships and simple pleasures of the past, as well as the
enormous social changes that took place from 1900 onwards, building to a
compelling social history of Britain.

Hands on History are looking to connect people with their past through
film. Activity will aim to increase people's knowledge of the film
archives, to show them how you can connect with the past through film,
and to encourage people to share stories and memories. The BBC are
producing resources, available to order through your regional Learning
Project Manager, to increase people's understanding of film archives and
to support libraries and other organisations that would like to host
reminiscing events, as well as family activities to do at home.

BBC Things To Do

The BBC have recently launched their new activity finder website
called Things To Do <http://www.bbc.co.uk/thingstodo>

The Things To Do website will enable the public to find activities and
events being run by the BBC or their partner organisations such as
libraries. People will be able to find out about activities in a very
visually appealing way, on a website that is easy to navigate. It
supports the ambition of the BBC to engage people in 'hands-on'
activities that inform, entertain and inspire further learning.

The BBC will promote the Things To Do website on an ongoing basis
through television and radio programmes, on the BBC's homepage, on BBC
Local and regional pages, and on BBC genre pages such as history,
nature, science, food etc. It will also have a version for internet
enabled mobile phones.

All activities and events on there must be linked to a BBC project i.e.
a BBC television or radio programme, or other specific BBC campaign.

We are working with Culture24, a not-for-profit online publisher and the
official cultural data provider to the BBC. They'll be supplying
information on activities happening in libraries, museums, galleries,
heritage sites and other cultural venues directly from their database to
the BBC Things To Do website. Culture24 are working with the BBC to
register organisations, provide usernames and passwords so that you're
able to add your information. .
