Hi Linda, this may not be any help but there is one for German names too: Personennamendatei, PND and it seems to be linked to some sort of EU portal (http://www.biographie-portal.eu/) - sorry to be rather vague about this but my notes were based on listening to presentations in German so are a bit sketchy. I just remember thinking when I heard about it, surely it should be possible to do something like this for a place the size of Scotland.
best wishes,
Sheila
ps we tend to use ULAN to check out preferred maker names - although the versions 'preferred' by ULAN are not always the ones we like ourselves.

Subject: Thesaurus of people and organisation names??

We are looking at how we can standardise, across 8 partners, the names
we use for artists, makers etc. for our works of art and museum objects.

I have discovered that Finland have a names thesaurus - ONKI People: An
Ontology Service for Finding People and Organizations
http://www.seco.tkk.fi/services/onkipeople/

Is there anything similar for the UK / Europe?

Has anyone else tackled this issue and come up with their own home-grown
thesaurus of names?

Be interested in peoples thoughts / ideas...
