Souls and Spices: Asia in the Age of Exploration 1500-1650

The production, exchange, and consumption of works of art and architecture, together with European approaches to cultural difference, exoticism and otherness gave rise to deliberate designs of colonial power in Asia during the age of exploration. Works created under and for different European groups in Asia represent an enterprise in visual culture and social adaptation that transformed and hybridized the indigenous culture. These cross-cultural works were joint efforts on the behalf of colonial rulers, European merchants, the industrial elite, and indigenous groups. Through multiple aspects of patronage - religious, political, economic, cultural - this panel will explore the roles of objects of art and architecture that united and separated indigenous and European groups. Papers will address cultural exchange, identity, transculturalism, uses and meanings of colonial objects, hybridity, and in general, modes of interaction between disciplines and cultures. Papers may also consider European markets for Asian objects, and/or Asian influenced objects of art and architecture in Europe. Please send a title, abstract (150 words), and CV to: Mallica Kumbera Landrus ([log in to unmask]) and Matthew Landrus ([log in to unmask]).
