Subject: What would you do?

Hi all,

I just received this email:

“Just an idea I had in discussion with some of my speciality colleagues: some of them were bemoaning the fact that they cannot get to the library very often, and hence some of the speciality journals are probably under-used. We wondered about having the latest copy of very specialist journals (eg J A A D, but not N Engl J Med for eg) sent to the relevant department in the first instance. They would only get the next copy on the very strict condition that they returned the previous months copy to the library. This would result in the library having a one month old copy on the current journal stack – but would guarantee more use of each journal. It’s an idea I’d support – but how do you feel about that? We could trial it in the first instance if you wanted to see how it would go.”

Now it seems to me that this is a bit of a dangerous road to go down - do we just become a cupboard for storing old journals (ignoring the obvious access for all staff arguments!)?

Any comments or suggestions welcome.

Kind regards

Tim
