Creider <[log in to unmask]> To: [log in to unmask] I have just read and highly recommend an article in the Journal of Map and Geography Libraries v. 7 (2011): 184-210): "Early Printed Atlases: Shaping Plato's 'Forms' into Bibliographic Descriptions" by Jan Smits and Todd Fell. The article discusses the problems with cataloging early atlases, which may never have existed as an "ideal" form, deviations from which may be recorded in a cataloging description. The article raises interesting questions that need to be pursued about the function of "ideal copy" in cataloging and the relationship of manifestation and item in the FRBR framework. Todd is chair of the editorial group working on Descriptive Cataloging of Rare Materials (Cartographic). -- Laurence S.
