italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies Dear Michelle,

my suggestion would be to make friends with the most senior archivist.
He/her will disclose you the inner sancta of his/her archive.

Best,

Raffaella

Here is a book on working with manuscripts, although it's about Medieval manuscripts, not, unfortunately, Renaissance ones. I don't know if a similar book exists for Renaissance manuscripts: Introduction to Manuscript Studies (Paperback) by Raymond Clemens (Author), Timothy Graham.
I hope this is useful.
Sincerely,
Jim Ward
P.S. You might also try contacting Patricia Fortini Brown, an expert with many years of experience working in Venetian archives.

Hi Michelle,

In my experience, different Italian archives can have their idiosyncrasies. I’d be happy to give you some suggestions about the Venetian archives if you drop me an email (your email address isn’t listed). For Venice, you might find the following website and mailing list useful and interesting – the latter is a good place to ask queries before and while you’re working there, and all messages are archived so you can search for past tips on using the ASV/Correr:

Website: http://www.newsontherialto.com/index.php

Serenissima (a yahoo group): http://groups.yahoo.com/group/serenissima/

Best wishes,

Alex Bamji

italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies

Hello--

I am wondering: could anyone recommend a good book or other resource--in either English or Italian--that serves as an introduction to working in Italian libraries and archives? Does something like this exist? (I am a graduate student whose experience in this is limited so far.) I realise that one gets more savvy with experience, and that much learning like this has to take a trial-and-error format. However, a general overview would be useful, in addition to what can be gleaned from individual institutions' websites. I am particularly interested in Venice--the Archivio di Stato and the Correr library.

Tante grazie,

Michelle
