italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies "Cross-Contextual Adaptations and Innovations in Italian Spiritual Literature of the Renaissance" The purpose of this panel on Italian spiritual poetry and prose of the Renaissance and its earlier or contemporary sources of inspiration is to explore adaptations or innovations in the traditional form and/or function of these texts in light of the influence of other fields (art, music, liturgy), genres, locations, time periods and/or realms of experience (linguistic, private versus public, professional versus lay, etc.). Adaptations or innovations that are cross-medial (ex. the influence of art or music on literature), cross-genre (ex. epistolary or liturgical inspiration for a lyric poem), or cross-cultural (ex. France to Italy, medieval to Renaissance, Latin to Italian) are of particular interest. Texts under examination may be fiction or non-fiction, instructive or entertaining, serious or ludic, professional or lay. They may include but are not limited to treatises, essays, letters, epics, or verses. A broader goal of this panel is to consider untraditional sources of inspiration for striking changes in the form or function of spiritual literature during the period of the Renaissance, especially (but not exclusively) during its later and liminal phases where it gives way to the Reformation.
