Yes, the linux based password recovery disk is the best option. Makes you worry when you realise how insecure your windows system is though!

Morning all

My daughter, in New Zealand, has forgotten the admin login password on
her laptop. Her stepfather has asked whether I know of a way of
retrieval/reset other than Ophcrack.

As I have enough IT knowledge to be dangerous rather than effective, I
thought I would ask some experts!

I recall that there is a way to access the hard drive using an Ubuntu
boot disc and will google it but any other suggestions please? I
assume that backup of data is less robust than it should be. Most if
not all of her school work is on the computer. Consequently at the
very least the data needs to be retrieved before reinstallation.

The situation is complicated slightly by a current lack of phone
numbers but that's another story.

Thanks in advance

Russell
