IPSE Seminar Series: Transformations in Educational Workforces
Educating Communities: teachers in supplementary schools

Wednesday 1st June 2011.  5 -7pm.
London Metropolitan University, Tower Building. Room T1-20

Dear all,

You are warmly invited to the second* seminar in series: Educating Communities: teachers in supplementary schools

The aim of this seminar is to explore the growth of supplementary and complementary education from the grass roots, giving a voice to the experiences of people involved in educating, and supporting education, outside of mainstream schooling: a ‘shadow’ workforce often made up of parents and community leaders and activists. This seminar explores the tensions and ambiguities encountered by those working within the shadows of formal schooling, and the benefits of making links between the complementary and mainstream sectors.

Speakers:
Dr. Uvanney Maylor, University of Bedfordshire and Dr. Anthea Rose, IPSE 'Supplementary school teachers making a difference to BME pupils'.

Dr. Raymonde Sneddon, UEL '21 years in East London: Issues in policy, research and practice'.

Dr. Charmian Kenner, Goldsmiths 'Partnerships between teachers in complementary and mainstream schools'.

The event will be Chaired by Dr. Tozun Issa, author of Complementary Schools in the UK, and Director of the Centre for Multilingualism in Education, London Metropolitan University.

Free Public Seminar: All welcome but places limited so please RSVP to Angela Kamara, at the Institute for Policy Studies in Education (IPSE)  [log in to unmask] tel. 020 7133 4189

"The study of the humanities must not be neglected, and the College of the Arts and Sciences must be strengthened and encouraged to develop its studies. These are the subjects which contribute most of the understanding and growth of our cultural heritage, and so assist in fulfilling one of the University's primary aims. These studies, which are concerned with human cultural achievements, human rights, and duties, human freedoms, will enable youth to develop the understanding and judgment necessary to the formulation of a sound philosophy of life, to the making of wise choices, and to understand what is involved in these choices..."

Speech by Emperor Haile Selassie I, 19th December 1961
