Afternoon all

Another route for content providers like us is via JISC. We (ie IHS and
NBS) take this route with The Construction Information Service, which
contains expensive-to-obtain documents. We've just renewed the JISC
agreement for 3 years and I was in the negotiations. Among the
advantages for end-user HEIs is that JISC understands the financial
pressures on its members over that period and negotiates prices hard
with the likely financial patterns of HEIs over that period in mind. It
also deals robustly with continuous improvement issues such and
federated access and metadata and requires its contractors to plug into
new JISC content development initiatives.

I think this is a good issue to present for discussion at the AGM: a
negotiating strategy. We might want to think if we want, in the future,
to reply to those approaching us individually to sell us new databases
and services, that ARCLIB will negotiate on our behalf a consistent deal
and that we will require an extended trial period for new products so
that they will comply with our exacting standards, or something along
the line.

Best Wishes,

Carla

I think these sort of situations are going to arise more and more as
traditional architectural publishers try to get online in order to
retain their market share and survive - I guess we'll need to stick
together and maybe toughen up a bit to get what we collectively want,
particularly when so many publishers seem delusional about the true
value of their content. Personally I find it especially hard when
publishers wheel in academics and students to put additional pressure on
me to purchase dodgy content - this happened to me with Wayne
Hemingway's 'Land of Lost Content' image database last year. I seemed to
be the only person remotely troubled by the fact that images of the
Forth Bridge were indexed as 'Fourth Bidge'. Still, I knew I'd won the
argument when Hemingway started calling me MISTER LIBRARIAN in a very
sarcastic tone J

That's it from me until 2014.

Not at all David, I think your comments are very pertinent indeed and
just the sort of professional feed back and thorough analysis needed! I
think this is exactly what we need to get back to AJ, as you said, this
will benefit all at the end so that we can end up with a top product to
everyone's satisfaction.

It is this level of engagement that makes ARCLIB a valuable negotiating
platform for the profession, and the more the better!

And I couldn't agree more with the points you raised, thanks David,

Carla

It's me again, sorry ... the more I think about this database, the more
I feel that it throws up some really interesting issues, quite apart
from the pricing. Janine suggested to us that the database would be
grown by architectural practices, who would be encouraged to contribute
content. While this is a nice and trendy idea, I'd be intrigued to know
how much editorial control will be exercised in order to prevent the
whole thing from degenerating into a glorified AJ-branded Flickr site. I
got the impression at our meeting that the database is being driven
forward pretty much by one person at the AJ; if this is still the case,
will they have the time to ensure that only worthwhile projects are
uploaded, let alone grapple with metadata quality, consistency and
accuracy? It would also be good to get some reassurance that the
database isn't going to be bloated out with endless examples of ghastly,
second-rate PFI school and hospital projects, because I feel that we
should be inspiring our students with the really good stuff. On the
other hand, I don't want to want to see a database stuffed with
'starchitecture', either.

I think it is legitimate for us to raise these issues because the AJ has
such a good reputation, and I'm sure that those of us who do purchase
this database will find that students are just going to plunge in and
make heavy use of it, possibly at the expense of other resources which
we might prefer them to consider alongside it. To some extent, our own
professional reputations are on the line here as well - when we
subscribe to a database and market it to our users, we're kind of saying
that it comes with our seal of approval.

I'm not picking on Janine or the AJ here, because this could be
happening with any of the architectural magazines, they're just one of
the first to try this model. But I think they're going about it the
wrong way, and maybe we can gently help them with some of the issues
that they've not considered properly, so that we can all end up with a
excellent, sensibly-priced new resource.

Or perhaps I'm fussing about nothing, and just need a holiday J
