Apologies, if this has already gone out via psci-comm - I may have missed it...

The next SameAs takes place next Tuesday 19 April 2011 (http://lanyrd.com/2011/sameas-art/) at The Driver, N1.

A group of us (below) will be talking about ‘Art’ (and science). The next best bit is that it’s *free* - and in a pub.

Since the email below went out, a sixth speaker has been added to the line-up - Chris Thorpe from Artfinder (formerly of MindCandy & The Guardian).

SameAs is the brainchild of Kay Thaney (http://twitter.com/kaythaney) and Matt Wood (http://twitter.com/mza). The SameAs website is at the following URL: http://sameas.us/

Best,

Wynn

Subject: Upcoming sameAs on 'science and art' - Tue, April 19 (and a note about May ...)

Hi, all -

An enormous thank you to all of you who came out for last month's sameAs on visualisation - hands down the biggest sameAs yet. We're back this month with a phenomenal line-up and a larger space - and hope you'll help us keep the momentum.

This month we're switching things up a bit and infusing Tuesday (April 19th) with some sameAs fun, exploring the topic of "art" in the sciences. We're thrilled to have a cracking set of speakers involved who will take us on a tour of eye and ear candy delights, looking at the ways science is artfully portrayed across a number of mediums.

For this month's sameAs, we welcome:

Jem Finer: Sound / visual artist, composer, founding member of The Pogues (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jem_Finer)

* Wynn Abbott: Art-science aficionado, director of the London Science Festival (http://www.londonsciencefestival.com/)

* Kat Austen: Editor of CultureLab, New Scientist (http://www.newscientist.com/blogs/culturelab/)

* Vanessa Harden: Concept designer, guerrilla gardner, master of interspecies collaboration creating art with bees (http://www.vanessaharden.com/)

* Tony Langford: Co-founder of Kinetica, a museum of electronic and experimental art / technology (http://www.kinetica-museum.org/new_site/kinetica_museum.php)

The fun kicks off at 7 pm on April 19th (a Tuesday - don't forget!), and we'll be taking over the first floor of The Driver (2-4 Wharfdale Road, Kings Cross N1 9RY). We've got a bigger space and more seating this time, and hope you'll come join us.

Admission is free, and all are welcome - first come, first served. Help us get a better idea of who's coming by logging it on our Lanyrd page: http://lanyrd.com/2011/sameas-art/

Also - our next sameAs will be on May 9th - so do mark your diaries. The topic will be "reputation" in the sciences, and we'll be looking at how science is rewarded, what the inefficiencies are and delving into some of the controversy. You won't want to miss it.

The 19th is quickly approaching, so do help us spread the word. For more, visit http://sameas.us We hope to see you there.

Yours in sameAs-ing,

Kay and Matt

sameAs is a new kind of meetup in London that brings together interesting people from diverse backgrounds to discuss science, technology and everything in-between. From artists and writers, to scientists and software developers: sameAs helps bring disparate communities and individuals under one roof for regular conversation and reveal the threads that stitch them all together.
