Thanks Bob, that offer of assistance is greatly appreciated – I hope it doesn’t come to that and if it does then I really don’t have the time to do it. Particularly if it comes at a time in the academic year when we are very busy.

If it comes to it – yes, that is what I had in mind.  However, until asked by anyone who audits the list I would rather not go down that route at the moment– Kevin and I would have to collect and store that information and there are approx 1000 members of Jisc.

Hi List,

Would it be worth each member making a statement of their study / work situation and which email is preferred as evidence should the list be audited?

I for one use my work email address when communicating with/accessing JISC and am also a bona fide OH student.  I know a lot of my colleagues do the same.  Please do all you can to keep the list going – it is such a useful resource for students and practitioners alike.  So many good contributors and so many words of wisdom.

Hello Julia
Valid point – I often do the same – but the list is at serious risk of folding. Kevin and I as co-managers have recently had serious discussions about how long it will remain viable.

It is HEFCE funded and we have already been advised that as such  we should have a minimum of 25% of subscribers emailing from a university address. I disagree with that stance as it is an exchange of ideas amongst OH professionals not academics and I have an argument up my sleeve that a number of subscribers are students on a variety of OH courses but choose to respond from their home or work email addresses .

There are one or two OH practitioners who work in university OH services – eg Bob Dunne and very few academics who contribute to the list discussions – probably about three, including myself and Kevin who co=manage it with a membership of approximately 1000! We are not kill-joys – we both want the resource to be available as an excellent exchange of thoughts and advice.

Anne

Can I add that if I see a thread of emails in a subject that does not interest me or I know are the usual suspects adding more and more to the same subject I have the option to spend 0.00001 of a second hitting the delete button!

Hello Anne,

I think you know me well-enough to know that I’ll occasionally throw in my 2p worth!

One of the strengths of JISC is that it is a networking site.  Serious issues are discussed and many members are assisted by not having to re-invent the wheel, especially those that are maybe not as long-in-the-tooth as you and me and although they’ve read the book, they haven’t quite got the tee-shirt.

Wittering will always happen as individuals vary in how they describe issues and how they react to different situations, and they may be writing just the same as they speak …… not everyone is succinct.

Friday funny’s really round off for most of us what has been a very serious and intense week, nobody should be censured for wanting to lighten their load, and there are a lot of sole-practitioners on JISC who’s main professional/social at work interaction is via the board and the funny’s are an integral part of that.

Should these ‘valuable contributors’ who have left the board be as eminent and worldly-wise as you indicate, they should be able to screen the ‘chaff from the wheat’ and focus on what is relevant without criticism of others who may not think as they do.

To quote:  One man’s (woman’s) meat is another man’s (woman’s) poison ….. [got to be PC here].

To change the dynamics of the board and become too straight laced would probably lose more contributors than it would keep, to the detriment of what we try to achieve by being on here in the first place ………… that is, disseminate evidence based knowledge and underpin sound OH practice.

There, I’ve had my 2p’s worth …………

Kind regards, Bob Dunn

Kevin and I have recently received information from people who had previously been good contributors to this site. Unfortunately they have decided to leave JISC due to what one person described as "chit chat which would be more appropriate on a facebook site", anothEr complained of wittering and another has commented on the inapproitiateness of "Friday Funnies". All had valid points. Kevin and I are both very wary that JISC may die a death if active contributors who share helpful information leave the list.

In order that we do not lose any more valuable contributors might I suggest that this forum is perhaps not the best place to hold such an exchange of information.  If you do feel you wish to add your 2p worth then please contact Musa off list.

Thank you for your co-operation.

Hi List,

I have been talking to few colleagues about the state of OHas, their salary and career prospect. It is quite baffling when one looks at the job adverts on recruitment websites, the poor salary being offered to qualified OHAs compared to their specialist counterparts in the NHS. What do people think about this? Is this a reflection of the status of occupational health in general or is it due to the proliferation of OH providers whose main objective is to keep salaries low and make lots of profit? In my observations the salaries being offered to OHAs has not moved for the past three years, now compare that to OHP, a complete ball of game. I think as a profession we needs to discuss about this and find a way to raise our profile and halt the stagnation in remuneration and status. I look forward to member’s contribution.
