Hi Barry

When carrying out mask fit testing for FFP3 type masks where good fit is essential bitter and sweet solutions are used during the test - it is a taste test rather than smell. You may be able to access info on the 3M web site - they taught us how to carry out the testing or contact me off line if you want some further info. It certainly works and is reassuring for employees who to know the mask doesn't leak and let in the safe "tastes" therefore should provide the protection they need.

A number of other people have suggested this as an option as well as 'citrex'. I am going to try and get some. Where did you get it?

I used to use "banana oil" in fit testing for BA equipment, if they could smell the oil the mask was not fitted properly.

Subject: [OCC-HEALTH] Engaging senses of smell

Hi all

I am putting together a session on risk communication and specifically the engaging of the 5 senses in a training setting. I was wondering whether anyone had come across examples of either taste or smell being used in a OH/H&S context. I was thinking of something like using smell as a way to train hazard identification in say a chemicals setting (almost a scratch and sniff exercise).

Any suggestions gratefully accepted

Regards

Barry
