Hi Barry When carrying out mask fit testing for FFP3 type masks where good fit is essential bitter and sweet solutions are used during the test - it is a taste test rather than smell. You may be able to access info on the 3M web site - they taught us how to carry out the testing or contact me off line if you want some further info. It certainly works and is reassuring for employees who to know the mask doesn't leak and let in the safe "tastes" therefore should provide the protection they need.
