Hi Sarah and all,

we are looking to have mandatory or opt out immunisation for front line
staff in our higher risk areas (A & E, paeds, materntiy services and so on)
and will require tjhose staff who do not wish to be vaccinated to justify
their position to OH and management. We will still have an opt-in for lower
risk staff groups but will firm up on our marketing to increasde uptake in
these groups.

There is a super book "The patient as victim and vector" by Battin et al
(http://www.amazon.co.uk/Patient-Victim-Vector-Infectious-Disease/dp/0195335
83X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1303370468&sr=1-1) that goes over the
ethical arguements about mandated vaccination of healthcare staff

Paul

Subject: [OCC-HEALTH] Flu preparedness

Hi all

The OH dept has been asked to comment on how we might increase uptake of
the flu vaccine next season. (Don't... is this the bain of every OH dept's
life...?)

Anyway, the CMO has issued a letter - see below

http://www.dh.gov.uk/prod_consum_dh/groups/dh_digitalassets/documents/digita
lasset/dh_125365.pdf

In turn, NHSL issued a letter asking for assurances for next season's flu
vaccinations and are asking how we are planning to increase uptake.

So, all ideas/suggestions welcome... We already do advertising, visits to
wards and departments, FAQ's and the like.

One brilliant idea came from talking to an OH person at another hospital
today. They had their night time service managers trained up to administer
flu vaccinations to night staff.

S :-)
