2011 Thomas Harriot Lecture

This year’s Thomas Harriot Lecture will take place at 5pm on Thursday 19 May in the Champneys Room, Oriel College, Oxford. The lecturer will be Dr Surekha Davies of Birkbeck College, University of London. Dr Davies’s subject will be “Thomas Harriot, John White, and the Invention of the Algonquian Indian, 1585-1650”.

The lecture will be followed by drinks in the Champneys Room, and between 6pm and 7pm there will be an opportunity of viewing the exhibition “Distance & Discovery” in the College Library. The exhibition, of books relating to exploration and discovery in Harriot’s time, has been arranged by the college’s librarian, Marjory Szurko.

The Thomas Harriot Lecture has been delivered annually at Oriel since 1990. The first ten lectures were published as "Thomas Harriot. An Elizabethan Man of Science", edited by Robert Fox (Aldershot: Ashgate, 2000), and a second volume of lectures is now in preparation.
