Rationale and Objectives

The Arab cultural studies group is a gathering of scholars sharing intellectual interest in Arab culture, media and society. Its members are all research active academics coming from different areas of research, including: anthropology, media studies, politics, sociology, gender studies, art criticism, cultural studies, migration studies and philosophy. The aim of the Arab cultural studies group is to create a transnational interdisciplinary public space that engages with, produces and disseminates academic work dealing with socio-cultural and political transformations taking place in the Arab world. We also see the group as a vehicle for the initiation of a critical and creative Arab cultural studies project.

Members of the group will meet twice a year either at the University of Westminster or at the School of Oriental and African Studies (when funding is available we wish to extend our meetings to the Arab region) where academic papers will be presented and future collaborative research discussed. We aim to open a dialogue and work closely with different universities in the Arab world. To cement the activities of the group and make them available to a transnational audience, an online platform will be created, which will provide space for publications and group discussions.
