This presentation
explores why legacy media are struggling to adapt to the contemporary media
environment, allowing new entrants to seize the potential of new technologies
and market leadership in high growth new sectors. Applying insights from
organizational theory, population theory, and corporate research it explains
incumbent media’s difficulties with innovation. It shows that organizational
routines and processes, financial constraints and cultural values come together
to prevent many incumbents from innovating successfully and reviews historical
developments to support for these theoretical contentions.
