2.00-4.30pm Teaching Critical Appraisal for Librarians
The ability to read, understand and critically appraise research and literature is fast becoming a required core skill for librarians. With the amount of information available to us increasing, it is important to spend the limited amount of time we do have
reading those documents that will be useful and most effective to us. This session introduces some of the key concepts for teaching critical appraisal, the key principles behind critical appraisal of research and methods for appraising research in practice.
This course is designed to give you the skills to critically evaluate research papers and interpret their findings.
By the end of the course participants will have:

Gained a clear understanding of what is meant by 'critical appraisal'
·
Reflected on the relevance of critical appraisal to LIS
·
Investigated the similarities and differences between critical appraisal and quality
evaluation
·
Be able to distinguish between different types of study design and research methods
·
Discovered how to use toolkits for rapid appraisal of systematic reviews and randomised
control trials
·
