as “a good
starting point for anyone new to this area”
and as highlighting “many resources worth investigating that may have been overlooked.
Ideally this will be the first of many future revised and expanded editions!”
the Guide will be of particular
interest to those with low budgets (school libraries, public libraries, etc) and
a keen interest in providing electronic resources for their library.
The
2011 Guide to Free or Nearly-Free e-Books is offered as a tool – an
annotated listing of around 230 single titles, collections, archives, gateways
and search engines – for librarians and others involved in book selection
(e.g. teachers in schools) in all sectors – school, further and higher
education, public and special libraries – to facilitate easy access to
free e-books and e-book collections which can enhance their digital library.
The directory has a title and a general index.
The 2011 Guide to Free or
Nearly-Free e-Books. Edited by Chris Armstrong.
Available
via the Lulu button from the publisher’s website http://www.ukeig.org.uk/content/publications or from your normal
library book supplier.
One of the problems which
face all librarians adding e-books to their collections is that of locating new
titles: there is no legal deposit for e-books and consequently there is no
single place from which new titles can be found. That is true of commercially
published e-books, it is most certainly also the case for free e-books…
and there are many thousands of free e-books available over the Internet, many
of which are of a quality such that librarians might wish to have them in their
collections.
Note: Some years ago UKeiG published a series of
well-received guides and handbooks including the Quick Guide to Online Commands, which
ran to several editions, the Quick
Guide to CD-ROM Networking and the CD-ROM Practical Guide for Information Professionals. After
a gap of some years, the Group has now published its first new guide.
