Hi

We have made use of Facebook, twitter, Youtube and FLICKR for Cardiff Castle Museum of the Welsh Soldier for over a year. I have found that it is useful as a Regimental Museum in terms of keeping our fans up to date with museum developments, as well as news about both of our Regiments who are on active service out in Afghanistan.

We occasionally have had people make strong views on our walls. Although it is not our place to censor, I have occasionally removed comments (mostly extreme swearing) informing the author of those comments why they have been removed. There are also strong opinions on the current conflict in Afghanistan, we post statements stating that this is an individual opinion and not necessarily the opinion of the museum.

We had our Facebook page before we opened and made sure that photographs were uploaded showing people how the museum was taking shape. Social Networking is built into our marketing and audience development strategies.

It is fantastically rewarding, if time consuming to keep up to date and relevant.

Twitter can be automatically linked to your facebook, meaning that every time your FB is updated....the Twitter account will also.

Our sites are used to have an open dialogue with our visitors, talk with our regiments and also talk to people who aren't necessarily knowledgeable or traditionally interested in Regimental museums. What's more, at the moment this is free. In the current economic climate maximisation of free resources is incredibly important.

I hope this helps........didn't mean to go on so long!

best wishes and good luck,

Rachel

Dear all,

We are planning to start a facebook group and twitter account for Wigan Heritage Service. I was hoping some of you may have experiences and tips you would be willing to share. For example do you have a social media strategy/policy? How do you respond to negative comments? What types of things do you find work well as tweets and posts?

I've been following quite a few museums on both facebook and twitter so I'm getting a good idea of the types of things that museums post. My main concerns are to make sure we have a strategy and management plan.

Any help as always would be gratefully received.

Many thanks,

Jenny
