THE OPENCULTURE 2011 SALE!
To celebrate OpenCulture 2011 - The Greatest
Collections Management Show on Earth!
The Collections Trust has slashed the prices
of their Practical Guide books by 50%.
Collections Trust Practical Guides
Documentation: a practical guide
is the essential first stop for anyone wishing to manage a museum collection
and its documentation to a high standard. For those with no previous museum
experience, this book presents the basics of documentation clearly and
concisely, and for those with more experience it provides an easy-reference
guide to good documentation.
Collections Management: a practical
guide is the essential source of reference for anyone responsible for
collecting, caring for, and recording information about cultural collections
and making them accessible to other people. The framework method described
in this book is based on that set out in BSI PAS 197: Code of Practice
for Cultural Collections Management.
Copyright: a practical guide provides
essential guidance for anyone wishing to manage copyright in a collection.
This book will be of interest to archive, library and museum professionals
and provides a first stop in copyright guidance for collections managers,
archivists, curators, librarians, volunteers, students and trustees.
Pest Management: a practical guide
provides cultural heritage organisations with essential information on
identifying and dealing with pest problems, and gives comprehensive guidance
on implementing an effective pest management programme.
The books include chapters on key subject
areas, Top Tips, Bewares and Legal Alerts, and utilise bullets-points,
tables and flow charts, and are written in Plain English, making them accessible
to anyone working within the cultural heritage sector.
You can purchase the books online from:
http://shop.collectionslink.org.uk
or www.amazon.co.uk
Or via order form, downloadable from the
Collections Trust website: www.collectionstrust.org.uk/index.cfm/services/publications

Dear John
The Collections Trust's publication
Copyright: a practical guide (2009) is horribly expensive at £40
for 42 pages, but does contain some good content including a page on orphan
works and risk management and mitigation strategies.
Kind regards
Jack

Dear all
We have recently been asked by a private
company to provide a copy of a print (itself a copy of a painting) for
reproduction on an interpretation panel. The original artist is dead
but the work is still in copyright. We do not know who the copyright
holder of the original painting is now, nor do we know who produced the
print from the painting.
What do your museums do in these circumstances?
Does anyone have a policy on providing reproductions of items in
it collection which are copyright, but for which the copyright holder is
unknown or cannot be found?
Best wishes
John
