Can anyone shed any light on this object, brought in for identification
by one of our visitors? It was found buried by moorings on the Trent &
Mersey Canal at Stone in Staffordshire about 15 years ago. It's a
silver pendant, and measures 2.25" x 2.25". A local jeweller thought it
could be of 'Romany' origin. Our enquirer would like to know how old it
is, and if it could have belonged to a canal boat family.

Thanks

Chris

Dear Mr Copp,

I thought you may be interested to see the attached photo.

It is a pendant which I found about 15 years ago behind what was then a
workshop on the Newcastle Road, Stone (now flats)

The workshop backed onto the canal - nearly opposite the Canal Boat
company - and we used a mooring that was on that bank -

(i.e. opposite to the Tow Path) - for our boat.

I found the pendant in the mud - very dirty and dull looking. It
measures 2.25" x 2.25" . Five years ago a jeweller in Stone confirmed
it was silver and said she thought it was of "Romany" origin.

I would be interested to hear if you think it might have once been made
and worn by the one of the "boat people"? If it is of interest to the
museum, you are welcome to have it.

Best regards,

Sylvia Williams
