Applications invited for engage International Summer School 2011 Professional Development Opportunity:

New Galleries, New Audiences
engage International Summer School 2011
21-24 June, Ljubljana, Slovenia

engage is inviting applications from experienced gallery educators, artists, curators and academics for its International Summer School 2011.

engage’s peer-led International Summer School is an annual event for visual arts and education professionals who describe themselves as mid-career or senior (or equivalent), who are passionate about gallery education.

This year's Summer School will be hosted by Moderna galerija in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Visits will include a glimpse into the city's (not yet open) new museum of contemporary art, based in an-ex army barracks and forming part of the city's new 'museums quarter'. Delegates will also have the chance to visit the new Museum of Contemporary Art, Zagreb, in neighbouring Croatia. Ljubljana is four hours from Venice by bus, so easily combined with a visit to the Venice Biennale before or after Summer School.

This peer-led event represents a significant opportunity for colleagues at a similar stage in their careers to work together to:
* Reflect on aspects of current practice in gallery education
* Review current research and political agendas
* Consider the positioning of gallery education within the cultural sector
* Learn about international contexts for gallery education
* Network with UK and international colleagues

Summer School will explore the challenges faced by new galleries in developing new audiences. Questions posed will include:
* How can new galleries work with new audiences in their neighbourhood?
* How can relationships with community groups be established and maintained?
* What are the challenges posed by being placed in a residential setting?
* What happens to a city and its residents when an area is designated as a 'museum quarter'?
* What can we learn from international models, or are solutions country-specific?
* How can learning and best practice be shared internationally?

We look forward to workshops, arts activities, updates on academic research and discussions facilitated by the participants.

To apply:

There will be a maximum of 30 delegates at Summer School. Some funding (covering full costs of attendance) may be available through the Grundtvig European Visits and Exchanges Programme. Funding deadlines vary depending on location.
