The blank screen acts as an implicit baseline. No need to model it. Each conditions amplitude is in reference to the signal during the blank screen.

I am analyzing an old set of data that was given to me by my new lab. The study uses an event related design, but I don't think it has a baseline condition. I'm not sure how to analyze the data in this case. I was told that there might be a way for smp to model a baseline condition? Is that correct? There are three conditions in the experiment: English words, German cognates, and German noncognates. Each word is presented for 250ms, followed by a blank screen that ranges in time from 8-12 seconds. During this time the subjects press a key to respond to whether the word is something that is living or nonliving. The subjects have only 4 seconds to respond with a keypress. After that, the time ranges from 4-8 seconds before the next word is presented. Would it be ok for me to calculate a vector of onset 5 seconds after each word has been presented and use that as my baseline?I figure that by that time, all responses will have been made and the subject will just be staring at the blank screen waiting for the next word. Then another word is presented for 250ms and so on. Does anyone thing that might work? Does anyone have any suggestions for me? Thanks.
