Won’t copyright be an issue? Surely you’ll have to obtain written permission from the publishers before scanning entire books? This could be frustrating and costly.

I’d be interested to see a copy of the responses you get.

Subject: Scanning books

Hi all

We have been looking at the feasibility of building up an e-books collection of our 'most used' titles held in our health information library, but have come up against many problems, not least of which is the unavailability of some of the titles we require.

I am wondering about the possibility of using a book scanning service to scan the key texts we require to make them available electronically for our health information advisors and wonder if any colleagues have already looked into this process  or have implemented it for a small book collection. Any thoughts or advice regarding this would be most appreciated.

We are looking at  having approximately 50 books scanned to provide a core electronic resource for our call centre staff, but will obviously need to sort out relevant copyright permissions etc.

Regards
