Here we get bins emptied daily, and hoovered weekly.  Although often the cleaner is in a hurry and only hoovers as far as the lead will reach from the plug socket nearest the door, so I have to point out if a particular area is getting badly in need of hoovering.  If I ask nicely the cleaner will do things like clean fingermarks off the door glass, but she says she's 'not allowed' to clean tables or desks.  I assume that's to prevent paperwork etc on desks accidentally getting 'tidied' away, and tried to suggest that wiping the computer desks and reading desks would be allowed, but she was adamant.  So, every once in a while I wipe the tables myself, and dust the computers.  A window cleaner has just arrived to do the windows, and he claims they do them once every four months.  The books and shelves have never been cleaned as far as I know!

Subject: Library cleanliness

Good morning,

With a view to the current bigger picture surrounding libraries I am aware that my question may sound trite, but I would appreciate some information.

There has been an ongoing issue with the standard of cleaning in the library here (actual library space not library office) and yesterday someone informed me that bar Hoovering and emptying the bins (on a weekly basis) any other cleaning/dusting duties in the actual library should be done by library staff.

I would be grateful for any information regarding library cleaning- does your library get cleaned? If so, by whom and what exactly gets cleaned and how often?

I have worked out that to clean the desks/study booths/tops of shelves and relevant trunking etc would take me about 1 ½ hours.

Thanks in advance,

Leanne (currently not wearing a tabard)
