There’s still time to register for the joint NISO/Dublin Core Metadata Initiative (DCMI) webinar to be held Wednesday, March 16, 2011, from 1:00 - 2:30 p.m. (Eastern time). on the topic of Metadata Harmonization: Making Standards Work Together. ABOUT THE WEBINAR This webinar explores how metadata standards with significantly different characteristics can productively coexist and how previously isolated metadata communities can work towards harmonization. The webinar presents a solution-oriented analysis of current issues in metadata harmonization with a focus on specifications of importance to the learning technology and library environments, notably Dublin Core, IEEE Learning Object Metadata, and W3C's Resource Description Framework. Providing concrete illustrations of harmonization problems and a roadmap for designing metadata for maximum interoperability, this webinar will provide a bird's-eye perspective on the respective roles of metadata syntaxes, formats, semantics, abstract models, vocabularies, and application profiles in achieving metadata harmonization. SPEAKERS Mikael Nilsson, a PhD in media technology from the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, has extensive expertise in metadata standardization and interoperability, particularly at the crossroads between the Dublin Core, World Wide Web Consortium, and IEEE Learning Object Metadata communities. Thomas Baker, Chief Information Officer of the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative, was recently co-chair of the W3C Semantic Web Deployment Working Group and currently co-chairs a W3C Incubator Group on Library Linked Data. REGISTRATION This is the first of three joint NISO/DCMI webinars to be held in 2011. Anyone who registers for all three DCMI webinars can attend NISO's June 8 webinar on Semantic Web Linking for free, equivalent to a 25% discount on the four events. NISO and DCMI members receive a discount for both individual webinars and the package. There is also a student discount. The second NISO/DCMI webinar on International Bibliographic Standards, Linked Data, and the Impact on Library Cataloging will take place on August 24 and the third, The RDA Vocabularies: Implementation, Extension, and Mapping, will take place on November 16. Registration is per site (access for one computer). Can’t make it on the scheduled date and time? Registrants receive access to the recorded version for one year to watch at your convenience.
