italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies

The term is Italian.  I would check one of the major Italian dictionaries.

italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies

For an article I’m writing on the appearance of the piano nobile in U.S. buildings, usually designed by graduates of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, I would like to be able to say when the term was first introduced.  Was it used during the Renaissance – especially during the lifetime of Palladio who employed the motif in his buildings (but did not use the term in his masterwork, “I Quattro Libri dell’Architettura”)?  Or thereafter?

Thanks for any help or references.
