Barge and narrow boat are two different things but they (both) certainly can be found on canals.

Having just been involved in a Canal Conservation Area appraisal, I should point out that boats on canals are not barges, which are sea-going craft, but narrow boats, a point forcefully made by the local waterways society memebers.

for a sunken canal boat I've used 'wreck' as moument type.

Dear all,

Andy's approach is perfectly acceptable and indeed the one we use in the NMR for inland waterways.

Monument Type = WRECK

Maritime Craft = BARGE

For sunken barge use BARGE as sunken is the state it's in.

Agreed Andy, but in this particular context where Worcestershire has no coastline and will only have one or two records like this (I’m guessing here!), we would not normally even have the maritime tab visible (though this is all configurable of course ;-)

Hope all well in D&G!

But surely if it’s a sunken barge then it may have destination, cargo, cause of sinking etc? All fields that are on the Maritime tab.
